Before we can talk about the solution, it’s crucial to understand the problem. The soil throughout much of Southwestern Ontario is predominantly clay-based. Unlike sandy or loamy soils that allow water to drain through, clay is made of very fine particles that hold onto moisture.

  2. Geotextile Fabric: Before adding any new material, a layer of geotextile fabric is laid down. This permeable membrane acts as a crucial separator, preventing the new gravel base from mixing with the clay subsoil over time while still allowing water to drain through.

  3. Layered Compaction: We then build the new base using high-quality aggregate, like Granular 'A' gravel. This isn't just a matter of dumping it in. The gravel is added in several layers (or 'lifts') of a few inches at a time. Each lift is meticulously graded and compacted with a heavy-duty plate compactor to achieve maximum density.
